Senior project exploring what it would be like if we changed our school grading systems.

Our challenge

Go back to your old school days, what would life have been like for you if grades did not matter at all? In a nutshell that is what my senior project was about. I wanted to explore the following:

What could possibly replace the current grading system?
How would a new grading system influence learning?
What tools would teachers need to monitor progress?
What would entice students to compete and achieve?

My BFA project was going to showcase my skills in:

Product research
UX/UI
Graphic design
Photography
Illustration
Video editing
Simple HTML
3D printing
and industrial design

The solution

ilearn 4.0 was the result of months of research about grading systems and structures. My project suggested the following:

Implementing a correlation between concepts and unit blocks that would be marked as learned or in progress.
Students moving to new topics only when they mastered a subject, by demonstrating, knowledge, application, and classroom collaboration (teaching others).
All learning would be conducted online, and all homework would now become classroom work.
No more age-based placement, only progress tracking.

Final outcome

The culmination of my research and hard work was a BFA presentation that I proudly showcase to this day. It was not perfect, and I now can see many mistakes in each step, but I choose to include it as part of my professional portfolio because it is an incredibly important part of my foundation. If given the opportunity, I would love to revisit this concept once again to see how current technology could take this project even further. Keep in mind that when I graduated we were about 10% of where we are now in terms of tech :)
